"to assure Braxton County and central West Virginia youth the opportunity to pursue arts beyond high school as an avocation or vocation, and aid participants in the process of growth in self esteem and leadership."
The YTP (Youth Theater Project) is an innovative new arts program for youth in Braxton County and central West Virginia. With a focus on service, the YTP brings a new era of arts education, by and for youth, which will develop leaders in the arts and education and enrich our community.
Receiving training through the YTP, participants will serve the community through their involvement in activities that inform and educate on the importance of the arts.
Youth Theater Project participants receive training in various forms of the arts through workshops lead by appropriate college interns and other instructors. They also learn through participation in all aspects of theatrical production.
The youth then take their newly acquired skills into the community to various organizations, such as schools, churches, senior centers and civic groups who benefit from YTP productions and informative workshops.
Through this process the YTP influences future participants in the program and many YTP youth move on to college and careers in the arts, returning to teach the up-and-coming youth.
“The arts are essential to the education of all children and a comprehensive education in the arts (visual arts, dance, music and theater) provides a powerful means of engaging children in learning and improving student achievement. The arts help teach students many skills they need to succeed in life.”
— U.S. Conference of Mayors, “Official Policy Resolution,” 63rd Annual Conference, Miami, FL, June 1995The YTP works to establish long-term relationships with service recipients, who benefit from youth service and lend their support, making service providers and recipients more aware of the other's needs and assets, building a bridge between the youth and community.
Young participants learn civic responsibility while engaging in the arts. They learn to approach community members and organizations to learn their needs and assets; to tailor programming to reflect community needs; to gain understanding of the importance of leadership skills; and how to bond with team members to accomplish goals.
The goal of the Youth Theater Project is to use participation in the arts to teach and encourage youth in service to their community; to offer them a vision of a future in multiple aspects of the arts; to teach them community service; and to provide education and entertainment to the community.

The Landmark Studio promotes and supports the arts and artisans in our community and improves the arts in our schools. It has no employees and all persons participating at the Landmark are volunteers, having produced over 100 theatrical shows including musicals, comedies and classical theater. YTP participates as members of the Landmark Studio through board participation, recruitment, facility improvement, and production participation as actors, producers and technicians, allowing youth to develop leadership and presentation capabilities for use in the community as they mature. YTP participants are supported by the Landmark Studio for the Arts and adult community volunteers, learning about the arts through participation and training.
While in the safe environment of the Landmark, the YTP builds youth leadership through exposure, participation and training, including all aspects of theatrical productions: writing, videography, photography, theater technicians, acting and more.
