2007 West Virginia Filmmakers Film Festival ’Äì Stephen Gilliland Selected as WV Filmmaker of the Year

(Charleston, October 5, 2007) The Eighth Annual West Virginia Filmmakers Film Festival will open on Friday, October 12th and continue until Sunday evening on October 14th.

This year’Äôs event is dedicated to the memory of WV filmmaker Judy Lee Schmitt who passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, September 30th after a short illness. She attended almost every WVFFF event since its inception in 2000 with her husband and co-filmmaker Ray. She will be deeply missed.

Steve Gilliland, assistant professor of film at West Virginia State University Communications Dept., West Virginia’Äôs only film school, was chosen to be the 2007 West Virginia Filmmaker of the Year, sponsored by the WV Film Office. Mr. Gilliland received his MA in film from the University of Arkansas and has been teaching at WVSU for more than a decade. In cooperation with Daniel Boyd he has guided hundreds of film students in his classes on film appreciation, film production, and animation. He has been one of the leaders of the Paradise Film Institute and has worked on a dozen films with Mr. Boyd and other WV filmmakers. Boyd wrote me, ’ÄúHe was the first filmmaker I met there (U. of Arkansas) and I wanted to be like him. He shot my first documentary,’Äù Homeless Brother" and we've been together since. We worked together in Russia and Tanzania. He was production designer on all 3 of my features. I owe much of the 'look' of those films to him. He has been my closest collaborator, cellmate (our offices side by side), even best man at my wedding (as I was at his). We should also note that he put other's careers ahead of his own by working for/with so many others, leaving little time for himself. I owe much of mine to him.’Äù

He has also been an active member of the WV Filmmakers Guild and the WV Filmmakers Film Festival. He will receive a unique sculpture created by Sutton artist Bill Hopen, funded by the West Virginia Film Office. The previous winners were’Äì 2003 ’Äì Daniel Boyd. 2004 ’Äì Ray Schmitt 2005- B.J. Gudmundsson. 2006 ’Äì Gerald Milnes.

There are two separate film competitions this year ’Äì as last year. First, there is the traditional film competition for short and long, documentaries and non-documentary works. Entries will be screened October 12, 13, and 14, 2007 at the festival. The official form and more info are posted at http://www.landmarkstudio.org/wvfff/index.html. Contact festival president Kevin Carpenter at kevincarpenter@hotmail.com. The second competition is the Two-Minute Horror Film Competition. The winner will receive $100. Full info is posted at the website.
